Club Break and Winter Camp
LA Galaxy South Bay Club Break Dec 15th-Jan 5th ---> Winter Camp December 26th-29th and State Cup info

LA Galaxy South Bay club winter break will be December 15th through January 5th.

Over the break certain fields will be available for practices. Fields will not be reserved for scrimmages during this time. Please contact Tim if there is a field that you would like to use at a particular time.

A small article about the importance of rest is below:

'In order for players to maximize their performance levels, they must regenerate. At the highest levels of play, the summer break is critical for players to heal from injuries, take a mental break, and just plain get that loving feeling back for the game they play for a living. But what about kids, do they need a break, too? The answer is an emphatic “YES!” Oftentimes clubs (even with teams at very young ages) practice year-round, and as a result, kids are losing a much needed break. But the truth is, kids, just like everyone else, need to step away from the game for various reasons'.

Girls Teams Qualify for CRL
Congratulations to the girls side of LA Galaxy South Bay as being one of only three clubs in Cal South

Congratulations to the girls side of LA Galaxy South Bay as being one of only three clubs in Cal South having a team in every age group (U12-18) participating in the California Regional League Premier Division.

“The California Regional League is a division of the US Youth Soccer Far West Regional League, which consists of the fourteen (14) western state associations. The California Regional League was structured to reduce costs, eliminate excessive travel and foster better competition. The California Regional L

eague is operated by US Youth Soccer Region IV and managed by the CRL Commissioner and the CRL Committee.

The Far West Regional League will be divided into three divisions comprised of 1) the California Division: Cal South and Cal North; 2) the Four Corners Division: New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Southern Nevada; and 3) the Northern Division: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming,

Hawaii, Alaska and Northern Nevada. The California Division will receive two placements in the US Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships with one placement going to the winners of each age division in the Cal North and Cal South sub-divisions. The Four Corners Division and Northern Division will each receive one position.

There are significant benefits for teams playing in the California Regional League. They will face top competition, playing the best clubs and teams within each age group in the state of California. With state-based play, there is less travel and lower costs to the players and parents. League play will be in Northern and Southern California, depending on your geographic location. Teams in the CaliforniaRegional League are playing for placement in the US Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships and qualification to the US Youth Soccer National League. The league will provide greater exposure to U.S. Soccer National Team staff, top college coaches, Region IV ODP staff and Cal South Pro+ scouts. “

Good luck girls!

Ex LA Galaxy South Bay Technical Director Announced at Toronto FC Head Coach

Toronto FC announced Wednesday that it has hired Greg Vanney as Assistant General Manager and Toronto FC KIA Academy Director. As a result, Thomas Rongen is no longer the Director of the Academy.

“Greg is a visionary when it comes to player development. He shares our Club’s passion for innovation and is an educator of both players and coaches. We are pleased to welcome him to Toronto FC,” said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “I’d like to thank Thomas for the tremendous job he has done over the past two years here. I have a great deal of respect for him and wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Vanney, 39, joins Toronto FC after most recently serving as the head coach for LA Galaxy’s U-14 Academy side and Technical Director of the LA Galaxy partner club LA Galaxy South Bay. He is also currently taking part in the Elite Formation Coaching Licence program, a development course partnered by Major League Soccer (MLS) and the French Football Federation. Vanney holds a USSF “A” Coaching License and has been involved with the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.

Vanney previously held titles of Director of Soccer Operations and Director of Real Salt Lake-Arizona Youth Academy at Grande Sports World. It was there that he oversaw program and business development at the Grande Sports World facility. Vanney, Grande Sports World, and Real Salt Lake were responsible for creation of the first MLS Residential Academy in the United States, which began play in the Fall of 2010. Vanney also held a dual role at Chivas USA from 2011-2012 as assistant coach under Robin Fraser and technical director of the youth academy.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to join the Toronto FC family and lead a great staff in the development and preparation of players for the TFC First Team.  The vision and commitment to success and innovation of the ownership, MLSE President & CEO Tim Leiweke, and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko, make this a very exciting challenge,” said Assistant General Manager & Toronto FC KIA Academy Director Greg Vanney. “I look forward to getting to work with the staff and players in the coming weeks and the Ontario soccer community at large.”

Vanney played professionally for 13 years, starting with the LA Galaxy in 1996. During his time with the Galaxy, Vanney helped lead the club to three MLS Cup championship finals, one Supporter's Shield, a US Open Cup Championship and a CONCACAF Champions Cup title.  He was named to the MLS Best XI in 2000 and 2001. Following the 2001 season, Vanney transferred to SC Bastia, of France’s Ligue 1, where he remained until 2005 helping the club reach the Coup de France Final in 2002. He re-joined MLS, signing with FC Dallas and spent two seasons with the Hoops; where he earned two All-Star selections, captaining the 2005 team to a 4-0 victory over Fulham. Vanney was traded to the Colorado Rapids in January 2007, and then to D.C. United later that same season. Vanney re-joined the LA Galaxy in February 2008 and retired at the conclusion of the season. During his playing career, Vanney earned 36 caps and scored one goal for the United States Men’s National team. He was part of the U.S. side that won the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Rongen, 57, was hired on January 6, 2012, and spent the past two seasons heading the Toronto FC KIA Academy.

LA Galaxy South Bay Skills Training with Curt Onalfo

LA Galaxy South Bay Skills Training with Curt Onalfo is directed, run and attended by Curt Onalfo, Head Coach of LA Galaxy II and Assistant Coach of LA Galaxy. Each 8-week program is comprised of a 1-hour per week, intense skills training session to help DRAMATICALLY improve each player’s technical skills on the ball. The small group approach allows EACH player to get individualized attention by creating a 1-to-8 ratio of player to coach with an emphasis on maximizing the amount of touches on the ball for each playerwhile still allowing for tactical instruction because of the small groups in each session. It is remarkable how much our players have improved. Players that have been attending multiple programs per year have become some of the most skillful players in the area.

WHO: Designed for dedicated soccer players that want to improve dramatically.

WHAT: 8 weekly, 1-hour intensive instructional small group lessons

Coastal Classic Brings Record Number of Teams to the South Bay

With over 400 games played, the 2014 Coastal Classic is in the books. And it's a big book: 231 participating teams is the largest tournament as far back as our records go (2008), and is the fourth year of significant growth since we moved the tournament to the summer. The growth required new venues like Columbia Park, Lawndale HS, and Rolling Hills Prep, and the new facility at Maple Street was a great venue for U7 and U8 girls and U14 boys.

This year we experienced the first weather delay ever for the summer event, but the surprise thunderstorm Sunday afternoon only shortened one game.

Thanks to:

  • the clubs who sent a significant number of their teams to our event: Albion, Honolulu Bulls, Slammers, Legends, MB Sand & Surf, Rebels (San Diego), Real So Cal, Santa Clarita Magic, Slammers, Strikers, and West Coast.
  • the clubs and teams who travelled to the South Bay from out of the area: Bakersfield United, California Blues (Sacramento), Fresno Chaos, Honolulu Bulls, Real Salt Lake, Roadrunner United (Bakersfield), San Luis Obispo Fire, and Walnut Creek SC.
  • all the volunteers who checked teams in, chased down game cards, reported scores, answered questions, and sold t-shirts!
  • tournament director Tim Summiel, who managed this much more complex event, and Blake George, who assisted.
